“The inauguration of the BGM unit at our Kunheim facility enhances our ability to provide leading fibre-based packaging solutions. It aligns with our ‘Now & Next’ sustainability strategy, reaffirming our commitment to the circular economy by eliminating waste and pollution and extending the use of materials,” says Thibault Laumonier, President of DS Smith Packaging France.
“We are proud to innovate in the sustainable packaging industry in France, combining industrial performance with a focus on carbon reduction and the environment.”
The investment includes the installation of a state-of-the-art BGM Bahmüller and Göpfert Maschinen CL 20/55 casemaker, along with upgraded production line facilities.
The new BGM machine, which measures 65 meters in length and 11 meters in width, occupies a total area of 515 square meters. It is capable of printing, die-cutting, folding, and gluing large-format sheets of corrugated board in a single pass.
With the ability to handle formats up to 2000 by 5500 mm and produce up to 7,000 sheets per hour, the machine features two-color printing and flexible assembly techniques, including gluing and stitching.
For reference
The Kunheim facility, equipped with two corrugators and numerous converting lines, has an annual production capacity of approximately 60,000 tonnes (97 million square meters) across a wide range of packaging solutions.
Additionally, the facility has implemented a new Automated Flow Management system, featuring a transfer shuttle and a double in-line center for centering and depositing stacks of board sheets on a pallet. This system will allow DS Smith to create a diverse array of sustainable packaging solutions for various industrial sectors.
