Several major companies in the packaging industry are set to implement price hikes in early 2025.
Georgia-Pacific and International Paper are leading the charge in the U.S., with Georgia-Pacific planning to raise prices by $60 per ton for kraftliner and white top, and $90 per ton for recycled liner and medium in the Eastern states. In the Western states, the increases will be $80 per ton for kraftliner and $90 per ton for recycled and white top liner and medium.
International Paper is also pushing for a $70 per ton increase for liner and $90 per ton for medium.
Smurfit WestRock is the latest to join the trend, with plans to increase prices by $60 per ton for unbleached kraft and recycled linerboard, and $80 per ton for corrugating medium.
Additionally, the company will raise prices for white top linerboard by $70 per ton in the West region and $50 per ton in the East.
In Europe, Reno De Medici (RDM) has announced a price increase of €50 per ton for recycled board in continental Europe and £50 per ton in the UK.
This increase is driven by higher input costs, including energy and recovered fibre, and will be effective with orders from January 2025.
These price hikes reflect the ongoing challenges in the packaging industry, including rising input costs and the need to maintain profitability in a competitive market. Industry observers will be watching closely to see how these increases impact the market and whether they will be accepted by customers.
