“The corrugated industry boosts the economy, generates employment, and protects the environment. We are an example of the true circular economy,” says Leopoldo Santorromán, president of AFCO (Spanish Association of Manufacturers of Corrugated Board Packaging).

Spain has solidified its position as a key player in the European corrugated cardboard industry, now ranking as the third-largest producer in the region, following Italy and Germany.
This achievement was highlighted in the 2024 Sector Figures Report presented by AFCO .
The Spanish corrugated cardboard sector produced an impressive 5.8 billion square meters of material, generating a turnover of 6.9 billion euros and creating 25,445 jobs (12,095 direct and 13,350 indirect).
With 64 corrugating companies and 86 factories in operation, the industry plays a vital role in the economy and sustainability efforts.
Corrugated cardboard remains the preferred packaging solution for many industries, with 60% of demand coming from the food sector, followed by consumer goods (13.24%) and logistics/e-commerce (11.33%).
Its versatility, efficiency, and ability to optimize transport and logistics make it indispensable.
The report also emphasizes the sector’s commitment to sustainability. With a 90% recycling rate, corrugated cardboard leads the way in Europe as the most environmentally responsible packaging option.
Its renewable, biodegradable, and recyclable properties position it as a benchmark in the circular economy.
