Every Friday, we delight our readers with something wonderful from the art of corrugated cardboard. Today, we continue this wonderful section.
Chris Gilmour, a distinguished sculptor, has gained international acclaim for his hyper-realistic, life-size sculptures crafted entirely from corrugated cardboard and glue. Born in the UK in 1973, Gilmour pursued his studies at the University of the West of England before relocating to Northern Italy in 1996.
His innovative approach turns everyday materials into extraordinary works of art, challenging traditional perceptions of value and beauty.
Gilmour’s work has been showcased in renowned museums and galleries across Europe and America, including the New York Museum of Arts and Design and the San Jose Museum of Art. His sculptures, which often depict everyday objects with remarkable precision, have earned him numerous awards, such as the Premio Cairo in 2006 and the Premio Michetti in 2012.
In 2022, Gilmour launched Vectar Sets, a Manchester-based company that creates sustainable sets and scenery for film and TV using paper-based materials. This pioneering venture has already achieved success with major broadcasters like ITV, BBC, and Channel 4.
Gilmour’s commitment to sustainability and his ability to elevate humble materials into art have solidified his reputation as a modern artisan virtuoso. His work continues to inspire and provoke thought, reflecting a deep understanding of both artistic and environmental values.
