Dunapack Packaging is acquiring three operating corrugated plants from Stora Enso in Southwestern Germany — gaining immediate production, customers and market share in Europe’s largest corrugated market.

The deal includes Gaster Wellpappe, Sausenheimer Wellpappe GmbH and PTI, with around 350 employees and approximately €74 million expected turnover in 2025. Closing is planned for 2026, subject to regulatory approval.

Why This Is a Strategic Move — Not Just a Deal

Germany accounts for roughly 25–28% of Europe’s corrugated packaging market.

👉 By acquiring existing operations, Dunapack avoids years of investment and immediately secures an estimated 3–4% position in the German market.

But the key layer is deeper.

Dunapack is part of the Prinzhorn Group, which also owns Hamburger Containerboard.

👉 This creates direct integration between:

  • containerboard production
  • corrugated packaging conversion

Typical industry benchmarks suggest this can deliver 8–12% raw material cost advantages — a critical factor in a margin-sensitive business.

What Stora Enso Is Really Doing

For Stora Enso, this move fits a broader strategy:

  • focus on higher-margin segments
  • optimize the packaging portfolio
  • prepare for structural changes following its CMD 2025 direction (ForestCo / Renewables split)

👉 This is not a retreat — it is capital reallocation.

The Real Signal for the Market

This deal reflects a clear trend:

  • consolidation is accelerating
  • vertical integration is strengthening
  • access to key markets is becoming strategic

👉 Growth is no longer just about building capacity.
👉 It is about acquiring position and control.

corruga.expert — Bottom Line

Dunapack is not expanding step by step.
It is buying immediate presence in Europe’s most important corrugated market.

If this trend continues, by 2028 the top 5 players could control 55–60% of the European corrugated market (vs. ~48% today).

👉 That means:

  • fewer independent players
  • stronger integrated groups
  • higher competitive pressure across the industry

And this deal is one more clear step in that direction.
