“The Hazard Hunter Safety Program challenges teams to identify potential safety hazards,” American Forest & Paper Association notes. Once hazards are identified, teams shoot tutorial videos to prevent them
“One of WestRock‘s most important sustainability focus areas is supporting people and communities,” says the company’s CEO David Sewell.
“The team members at WestRock‘s Evadale Paper Mill in Texas have all effectively become hunters for possible safety hazards because of an innovative program they conceived and implemented.
“In just seven months our teammates estimate they’ve eliminated more than 13,000 potential life-changing events that could have resulted in serious injuries.
“Congratulations to the Evadale team for its award-winning Hazard Hunter Safety Program.”

“We use an expression at WestRock that guides how we behave at work: 100% safe,” says Chad White, Senior Safety Specialist at Evadele Mill. “It’s simple and is the only measure we’ll accept when it comes to safety.
“A cornerstone of how we eliminate injuries known as life-changing events is our emphasis on both identifying and mitigating them before they occur.
“Paper mills are large intense manufacturing facilities with many opportunities for risk.”

“At WestRock‘s Evadale Paper Mill in Texas the team developed a project to elevate employee safety in a way that’s successful, repeatable and scalable. It’s called the Hazard Hunter Program,” says David Hoerner, Senior Finance Manager at Evadale Mill.
“Teammates are challenged to identify exposures across the mill. In essence, we are all hazard hunters.
“Once we identify these hazards, teams who are closest to the risk are tasked with improving safety procedures and documenting. These procedures are then recorded and added to a video library to memorialize them.”

“Teammates are trained as they have always been on the new procedures in person and on paper, but training is extended to include another learning mode: video,” says Jessica Rowell, Evadale Mill‘s Master Black Belt.
“Learning becomes multifaceted because people absorb and retain information differently.
“What’s more these videos are a catalyst for evolving safety. We’re experimenting with other creative methods like drones to deliver a constant progression of engaging safety materials.
“This in-house effort cost us mostly our time which is well worth it considering injuries have no limit to what they cost.
“Because of the Hazard Hunter Program, we are proud to share that more than 200 potential hazards have been reported.
“We increased our aptitude for recognizing hazards. Best of all we’ve driven process improvement by caring for and supporting one another.”
