“We are thrilled with the advancements in the Duino investment initiative and the prospects it presents for our expanding packaging division,” says Andrew King, CEO of Mondi Group.

“The new containerboard equipment will enhance our vertical integration, ensuring a stable supply chain to improve customer satisfaction.”
Mondi has celebrated the commencement of construction at its Duino, Italy, marking a significant milestone in its €200 million investment in the recently acquired mill.
The mill’s existing paper machinery is undergoing transformation into a state-of-the-art recycled containerboard machine, expected to open new employment avenues for the workforce, foster and advance collaborations with community partners, and play a pivotal role in enhancing the local economy.

The anticipated launch of the new equipment is scheduled for 2025. Once it reaches full capacity, it will produce 420,000 tonnes of recycled containerboard, aimed at eco-friendly packaging options, and will become Mondi’s widest recycled paper machine with a width of 8.5 metres.
The mill intends to procure materials from local suppliers whenever possible, which will not only support the regional economy but also reduce greenhouse gas emissions by minimizing transportation distances and fortify the robustness of the supply chain.

“The investment in Duino represents a strategic effort to meet the escalating demand for eco-friendly products across Central Europe, the Mediterranean region, and particularly within the Italian market,” says Markus Gärtner, CEO of Mondi Corrugated Packaging.
“The project team is diligently preparing for the forthcoming construction stage, which encompasses the development of a new recycled fiber plant, a sophisticated wastewater treatment facility, and the requisite infrastructure and warehousing.”
