The winners are the EasyTray fruit & vegetable tray, the burglar-proof NoTamperBox, the Corrugated-board Wedge roll tray, the cheese TrapezeBox, the Turbocharger Volvo auto parts packaging, and the Eco Multi Rack modular chest of drawers
1. TrapezeBox, category: Food. Mondi Eschenbach GmbH
Paladin‘s previous three-piece 100% plastic cheese packaging had a semicircular shape that had not changed for many years and was therefore easily recognizable by customers. But time came to replace it with a sustainable one.
The challenge for Mondi Eschenbach was to accommodate the same number of cheese pieces in a sustainable packaging solution that had similar external dimensions. Since a corrugated cardboard box cannot be round, the arrangement of the cheese pieces was the crux of the development work. Eventually, Mondi designed the trapezoidal box for this purpose.
The new packaging not only improved the customer’s image, but also helped him save on warehousing (80% cost saving due to storage of flat blanks), packaging (70% saving), material weight (33% saving) of packaging, as well as eliminate the repackaging of plastic parts (approx. 6,000 standard cartons/10,000 sqm per year).
The new, one-piece packaging can be erected either manually or by machine, and still stands out from the crowd at the point of sale as it offers an optimal display function.
2. NoTamperBox, category: eCommerce. Mondi Türkiye
NoTamperBox is an alternative to conventional e-commerce plastic bags and boxes. Easily open and reseal, the packaging design uses edge locks and its easy wrap-around structure stops any tampering or damage to the product.
They are produced in two versions: NoTamperBox_Eco with an emphasis on saving packaging material, and NoTamperBox_Ultra with enhanced antitheft protection.
3. Corrugated-board Wedge, category: Transit. Mondi Austria
100% reusable and recyclable lightweight solution for safely transporting paper rolls. No more splinters from wooden alternatives.
4. Turbocharger, category: Transit. Mondi Ansbach
10mm-thick BCB corrugated board interior developed by Mondi Ansbach in collaboration with Volvo and APak AB for transportation of four delicate turbochargers. It’s lighter, more compact and provides better protection compared to previous solid plastic packaging. And that’s not to mention sustainability.
5. EasyTray, category: Fresh Froots & Vegetables. Mondi Türkiye
Designed as an alternative to the PS Plastic trays, EasyTray offers protection and good presentation for fresh food produce. Easy to use on manual and automated filling lines, it contributes to a longer product shelf life by supporting the trend for smaller portions while avoiding food waste.
6. Eco Multi Rack, category: Others. Mondi Warszawa Sp.zo.o.
Today, Internet companies often move to larger warehouses or reorganize existing ones. Modular cardboard racks can help in this challenge.
The Eco Multi Rack cardboard racking system is lightweight, so the entire rack can be easily moved from place to place; also, it is durable, resistant, environmentally friendly, and competitive in price with traditional metal racks.
One module can contain from one large to six smaller locations. Thus, a rack with 30-180 locations for products can be built on one euro pallet. The drawer types are easily interchangeable. The elements most exposed to damage during use can be quickly replaced without the need to dismantle the entire rack.
The awards ceremony and gala event for the 2023 WorldStar Packaging Awards will be held in May in Dusseldorf, Germany.
