Interview with Federico Noli, Regional Market Segment Manager PPS of tesa at Print4All.
— If a box maker or a corrugated packaging producer visits your booth, what would you show them?
— I’ll be glad to walk you through. Let me show you what we’ve developed that’s new for the market.
You know, sustainability is now a key priority in the corrugated packaging sector. So, over the past two years, we’ve been working on solutions that help manufacturers meet their sustainability targets. And here’s what we’ve come up with:
We’ve developed three new paper-based products: reinforcement tape, double-sided closing tape, and tear tape. Normally, tear tape is plastic—but ours is made from paper, and that’s a real breakthrough.
tesa SE is a global leader in self-adhesive technologies, headquartered in Norderstedt, Germany. Originally part of Beiersdorf AG, tesa became an independent company in 2001 and now operates in over 100 countries.
What’s exciting about all three is that they are fully recyclable along with the corrugated board—you don’t need to separate them for disposal. The paper we use is high-quality and durable. Sure, it might not be as flexible or strong as plastic film, but we’re really pleased with the performance of the tape.
- The tear tape is used to make boxes easier to open.
- The reinforcement tape is applied to side or front openings to prevent collapse or tearing.
- The double-sided tape is used to close the box.
All three are made from paper with natural rubber adhesive, so again, everything can be recycled with the board itself. These products are fully integrated into the recycling process and come with certifications: the paper is from responsibly managed sources, and we passed the SAPI recyclability test, which is the European standard for recyclable cardboard.
This is our contribution to making the market more sustainable—right down to the final customer.
— That sounds great. Is it mainly for e-commerce boxes or something else?
— It depends. The tear tape and reinforcement solutions are not just for e-commerce—they can be used in any box that needs to be opened easily or made stronger.
The reinforcement tape is also a design advantage: it lets packaging engineers use less material overall and just reinforce the critical areas.
As for the double-sided tape, yes—it’s especially useful for e-commerce, such as shipping clothes that may be returned. You can integrate the tape directly into the box, so when the customer needs to send something back, they simply remove the liner, reseal the box, and send it. No extra packaging waste—just reuse the same box.
So yes, this solution is perfect for e-commerce envelopes and shipping boxes, but the rest of the products are quite versatile—you can apply them wherever you like.
— Thank you, Federico.
— Thank you very much! It was a pleasure.
