The shutdown of one of the two book paper machines by the end of 2023 will reduce the Anjala site’s capacity by 250,000 tpy, and sales by approximately €100m. The new board machine in Oulu, expected to be launched in 2025, will produce about 750,000 tpy of renewable consumer board

“This investment is at the heart of our growing packaging segments,” says Andreas Birmoser, SVP, BU Consumer Board, Stora Enso. “Cartonboards are versatile, growing grades where we already have profound knowledge and a solid understanding of our customers’ needs and wishes. These new materials support plastic replacement solutions but also grow in their current traditional end-uses.
“We build on existing platforms to advance our future profitable growth. With smooth logistics and a highly developed supply chain in the Oulu region and beyond, we can serve our customers efficiently in all directions. It is crucial that we build on what we know but also expand.”

According to the company, the global demand for sustainable packaging materials is rapidly increasing, with projections indicating that the global consumer board market will reach 11m tonnes by 2030.

The PM closure at Stora Enso Anjala will result in the layoff of 50 workers.

“While it is very unfortunate that redundancies have to be made, we are pleased that the number of employees affected is significantly lower than anticipated,” says Hannu Kasurinen, EVP Packaging Materials division.
“Stora Enso will continue to harness the Anjalankoski site’s synergies between board and paper production and with the remaining paper machine, the Group will be able to continue producing its selection of book paper grades.”
The Anjala mill is part of the integrated Anjalankoski site which also includes the Ingerois packaging and board plant.
