In H2/2022, the Belgian company started conversion of the PM at the DA Alizay site, acquired from Double A Holdings in mid-2021. Previously, the 9.55m-wide machine produced 300,000 tpy of woodfree uncoated paper. Valmet is currently completing its transition to production of fluting and testliner grades with a basis weight range of 75–135 gsm. The start-up is scheduled for March-April 2023
The design speed of the newly rebuilt PM will be 1,300 m/min with an annual capacity of 450,000 tonnes of recycled corrugated case material.
The Alizay site will consume 650,000 tpy of recovered paper and board. After its launch, three VPK’s paper factories in France will produce more than 1,000,000 tonnes of recycled paper per year. The addition of the Alizay project also means that VPK Group will be annually recycling about 2,000,000 tonnes of paper.
Valmet’s grade conversion delivery included a new approach flow system, modifications to the headbox, a shoe and blade technology upgrade in the forming section, and a new OptiPress Center press section to improve drying and runnability. The drying section was updated into OptiRun Hybrid.
The delivery was also complemented with an extensive air systems upgrade and improvements in the automation system, including machine control systems, sectional drive control systems, quality management systems, process control systems, and a paper machine clothing package.
The Alizay site also houses a corrugated board plant. The new 2.8m corrugator from BHS Corrugated equipped with a two-colour printing unit was commissioned in November 2022. fit2size® fanfold will be produced on a high-performance Universal UniFold 220 line (up to 220 m/min). The corrugated board will be used for packaging production within the group and sold on the open market.
